INTRODUCTION - The purpose of this column is to provide news and archival information about the SBIR Program that may be helpful to the AeroWebSpace readership and it’s mission of supporting the development of small high technology businesses. Our focus will be on how to successfully use the SBIR program, and, things that the Feds and other winners won’t tell you. We will generally use the term SBIR to collectively include both SBIR and STTR. Initially, the column will treat:

  • News announcements and program changes
  • Strategies and tips to improve your probability of successful business acquisition
  • Information about the program with emphasis on "things that the Feds and SBIR winners won’t normally tell you"
  • Links to useful SBIR resources
  • Consultant listings to aid in the various facets of SBIR

The column is new so expect more each month. For you interested SBIR advocates, please feel free to submit comments and material you feel would enhance this web page.

NEWS FROM THE EDITOR – January, 2008

Another Take on SBIR Commercialization The Business Case for SBIR Commercialization.pdf>

Some Little Known But Big Advantages For SBIR Winners – The SBIR Mentor, Fred Patterson reports that Phase I and II winners qualify for certain special intellectual property rights, and sole source contractor justification when pursuing and capturing Phase III business with the Federal Government. These provisions were actually included in the 1982 legislation that resulted in the SBIR Program, and were redefined and clarified in ‘2002. Further explanation is available on www.sbircoach.com. Click on the link to his January ‘05 briefing on this subject, and see page 9. Have any of you heard about this before? It certainly got past most of the people I have talked with. We will report more details on this in the future.

"Converting Your Innovation Into a Successful Business Using SBIR Funding" – This May 23, ’05 dinner meeting, announced in the May edition of this column, cosponsored by the AIAA Enterprise Network and several Orange County IEEE organizations, was highly successful with over 90 attendees. The three presentations from this meeting are available at www.aiaaenterprise.org, click on "Speaker Archives". The program was unique in it’s emphasis on "how to win", and, the SBIR user oriented focus provided by the speakers: Ms. Vivian Lauderdale, Dr. Richard Nelson, and Ron Oglevie.
